About 084 Goad

What 084 Goad is for, who writes it, how claims are checked, and where to write when we get something wrong.

About this blog

This is a blog and nothing more complicated than that. Nothing is deleted once it is up, so the archive is the full record, written to the standard of the line under the logo, A daily nudge forward.

084 Goad exists for one reason. Most pages about Habits, focus and daily motivation are written to sell something, and very few are written by people who will still be here to answer for what they published.

The method

Each article answers one question about Habits, focus and daily motivation and then stops. Padding a page to look thorough is the easiest way to waste a reader's afternoon.

Nobody has editorial input except the people whose names are on the articles. That includes anyone who has ever sent us money.

The full process, including corrections and commercial links, is set out on the editorial policy page.

Who pays for this

Hosting and research come out of the same pocket that buys the things we write about. That keeps the running costs honest and the pace slow.

What is filed here

  • Games. Streaks, quests, leaderboards and practice in video games, and what they reveal about motivation.
  • Habits. Small habits that survive a bad week, and why most new habits quietly die.
  • Focus. Deep work, distraction and the practical limits of concentration.
  • Routines. Mornings, evenings and weekends built to need less willpower.
  • Goals. Breaking big targets into steps you can actually start today.
  • Study and Work. Learning new skills alongside a job, without burning out by month two.

Each piece sits under exactly one heading. Readers arriving from search mostly land in games, habits and focus, so those sections get looked after first.

Who writes here

Every article carries the name of the person who wrote it, and every name links to a page listing everything else they have written.

Lachlan Mbeki, Habits editor. Lachlan coached amateur runners for eight years and keeps a notebook of every habit he has started and dropped, which is a long notebook.

Priya Venkataraman, Focus and work writer. Priya is a software engineer who plans her day in ninety minute blocks and writes about what happens when the plan meets real meetings.

Ines Halvorsen, Games writer. Ines played ranked online games competitively through university and now studies why streaks, quests and leaderboards keep players going.

The limits of this site

There are questions we routinely decline. Anything that depends on facts only you can see, and anything where being wrong would cost you real money on our say so.

Fixing mistakes

Tell us which line is wrong and why, at [email protected] or through the contact page. Small errors are corrected the same week. Anything that changes the advice gets a dated note at the bottom of the article.
